Nerves, nerves, nerves...all week long.  I had talked with the race director earlier in the week and knew many elite kenyans were coming in so I knew I was going to have to PR just to have a shot of getting in the prize money (not counting Utah prize money).

My husband was gone this week, fishing in Alaska, so on friday I took the kids to my sister's who graciously let them all sleep over.  I headed to Salt Lake and enjoyed a few hour break from the past 7 days of kids, with no help, before going to bed.  Woke up, got ready, and left the hotel around 5:30.  Did a mile warmup, potty stop, and a few striders.  Talked to Sasha before the race began and I told him I was going to gage my pace off of him, since last year he beat me by just a little.

The race began and the crazy sprinting of herds of runners began.  I didn't get caught up in it and just went out exactly as planned...4:48 at mile 1, right with Sasha.  Mile 2, 9:44 (ish), so a 4:55 mile, still with Sasha and leading for the females.  Somewhere between mile 1 and 2, Sasha kindly offered to me to tuck in behind him and draft, but I declined knowing that I run better shoulder to shoulder, rather than following.  Mile 3, 15:01, so about a 5:15 mile.  At this point, the female winner of the race passed me.  I think she had just been pacing behind me, playing almost.  She flew by, I chased, but not nearly as fast :)  At this point too, I lost Sasha.  My next mile was a 5:10...thrilled about that, but definitely starting to really feel the race.  The next mile was soooo long, I was just trying to concentrate on staying strong and holding onto second place.  Mile 5, 5:19.  I remembered the last mile being painful last year, and this year was no different.  Thankfully at the turn that puts you onto the road for the finish, I came upon Clark Nielson.  He knew me and immediately began trying to get me to go with him.  I really appreciate what he did...he spent the next 1/2 mile telling me to "come on", "go get it", etc.  What a good guy!  I think he cost himself 10 seconds at least and inturn my time was 10 seconds faster than it would have been.  I missed the 6 mile mark, but based on my other marks and the .2 over the 6 mile, I think it was probably about 5:30.  Overall, average mile 5:12.

So second place, a PR by 17 seconds from last year, $1250...I will glady take it!  I am definitely happy about the race.  Kenyans grabbed the 1st, 3rd, and 4th spots, and I am thrilled I broke them up.  After the race, I was able to cool down with Kassi and catch up with several runners over the next hour.  My parents and sister came up too.  Great race day :)

Great job Lindsey. I passed you just before the 3rd mile when you were still with Sasha. But obviously I didn't get too far ahead of you! Great race!

Awesome, Linds. You were flyin'! Way to get a PR and bring home some cash! I'm seriously impressed with your time. 5:12 pace feels like death to me and you just averaged it over 10K! Sweet.

Lindsay, I was really impressed when Sasha told me that you had went by him. What kind of training have you been doing? Wow..

Congratulations! You are really a strong runner and it is awesome that you were able to come in before the other "elite" out of towners. Enjoy your prize money and the many kudos you've gotten. Great Race!

From James on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 18:50:52 from 174.23.34.125

I echo Paul. You are one fast Chica! Also, remind me to not run a 10k against you when I get better!

From Lindsey Dunkley on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 18:53:39 from 75.169.144.67

Again thanks!

Steve-thanks...and same as usual training although some probably don't believe it...5 days a week on the treadmill, one day a week on the road, total 40-44 mpw, never more miles than that...Seriously, never. Lots of quality, no quantity :)

Paul-thanks and I agree, good article :)

From steve ash on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 19:13:55 from 98.202.75.78

Lindsay, i'm not surprised. Keep going, I would not be surprised to see you in the Olympic games some day.

From Paul on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 19:18:39 from 174.27.193.158

Yeah, the article mentioned something about your "retirement". I totally hear ya on that, but make sure you do a marathon first! I bet you could go under 2:30.

From Bec on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 19:30:45 from 76.23.55.210

Very nice race! WOW!!!

From runningafterbabies on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 10:26:45 from 67.177.9.74

You killed the race, Lindsey! I am so proud of you for hanging in there and beating most of those Kenyans. You go girl.

From MichelleL on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 12:28:04 from 67.41.230.247

Nice job shaving off time from last year. Excellent race. Retiring? Not until I see you OTQ for the marathon, right? Perhaps do it with a fast half marathon time?

From jtshad on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 12:43:18 from 204.134.132.225

Congrats on a very strong race and big payday! Wow, you are fast!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 12:47:04 from 192.168.1.1

Steve:

Lindsey has a 2:25 flat sea level marathon, and about 31:30 DesNews 10 K in her off proper training. Possibly faster. She has the ability to at least shake the fist at if not beat the likes of Deena, Kara, and Shalane. She can run 32:19 off 45 miles a week on a treadmill, though. If you are looking for the magic, it is not the training, it is in the Quality X. She is very light, has birds bones, and a very efficient form. A mere maintenance training regimen will allow her to run quite impressive times.

But as hard as it may be to believe, we have not yet seen the true Lindsey in full strength. I have tried to convince her to start training properly, but have not yet succeeded. I do not easily give up, though.

From Burt on Wed, Jul 28, 2010 at 13:02:53 from 206.19.214.144

Haha! Your last paragraph made me crack up Sasha. You truly can see everyone's full potential.

From Lindsey Dunkley on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 18:58:43 from 75.169.144.67

So I just saw these last couple comments...

Sasha-truly thank you! You may not have been able to convince me of your training, but you have influenced me alot. You have definitely given me confidence and advice that has helped me over the past year. I would not have done my first 1/2 marathon without your advice...So thanks for your continued support.

Burt-I think he really does see every's potential and wants them to succeed in a sincere way.

From Burt on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 19:52:00 from 206.19.214.144

No doubt. That's what makes it so funny. "I do not easily give up, though."

Yeah, I have my own little image of what Sasha is like in real life. :)

From Walter on Mon, Aug 02, 2010 at 10:10:39 from 68.171.231.17

Lindsey, you are simply Marvelous. So amazing to read your report.
